How to Repair a DEEP SCRATCH in Car Paint (DIY)

Publicerades den 26 jan 2021
Learn how to repair a deep scratch in the paint of your car. In this case someone keyed my car so I will show you how to remove a deep scratch from that using a touch up paint pen. Fixing scratches in your car's paint is simple and if they are just clear coat scratches it is even easier.
To remove deep scratches you need to clean the scratch, sand the scratch, use touchup paint on the scratch, sand that paint smooth with the factory paint job, add clear coat, and wet sand that smooth with the factory paint. Then you can polish the whole panel and you are done!

  • congratulations and thank you for this video you make it looks really easy to do

  • Hello! Obviously as you know you have many subscribers in Europe. Could you please recommend any alternative for this Paint pen? I went to the website and my car is not even listed (Alfa Romeo 159). Like me, many Europeans would like to follow you in practice, yet many times products you recommend cannot be found here. Could you please try to recommend some alternatives for Europeans. Of course your won't have any responsibility if they don't work because maybe you don't have the time or can't try them yourself but at least a proposal to give a probably plausible alternative a try with our responsibility

  • "So my car got vandalized, this is awezome" lmao

  • Awesome! Thanks for all your videos, but especially this one.

  • Awesome, well done and great that you share the video for us

  • Would it work with Rock chips

  • If you're lazy you can just use brake fluid But it might damage you're paint🤣🤣🤣

  • can a rubbing compound and polishing compound replace the 3000 and 5000 grit sandpaper steps?

  • Can you do a videos on changing wheel speed sensors? I have a Grand Prix that the abs motor turns on every time I slow down to stop at a light, sometimes even when I’m stopped.

  • Thought I’d add this on too. If you pull on the clear cap with the ceramic tip, it will come off. Under will be a tiny fine point painting tip for small scratches. Super helpful for touching up rock dings or scratches near keyholes.

  • Does this work for a red car too?

  • How long did it take you to do the entire job?

  • I love you, someone keyed my 370z and I was quoted $750. I will try this

  • "Good"

  • bloody hell thats amazing results dude.

  • Soapy Wooder link not listed in description :(

  • Hi, manufacturer ? What's my paint code. Dealer : check the door

  • ummhh.. my car is cappuccino color... :D

  • Damn! My car was painted when I bought it and it's like a lightly darken purple and it has some scratches here and there and a few lines that look kinda deep on the left passenger side but my car was not clear coated which is what I noticed

  • Where did that small bottle of clearcoat come from?

  • as someone who just started driving consistently since july 2020 and still doesn’t know shizz about cars, this channel means so much to me. i have been taking an interest in cars recently ( i AT LEAST want to understand mine lol ) but have no one in my life to guide me. all i have is the internet at this point so i want to thank you chris for doing what you do. your videos are all made so damn well with so much time and effort put into them. WE NOTICE :) much love man!

  • Im-a head out to bang my car up, just so I have a scratch to fix

  • Plot twist: Some guy scratched ChrisFix's car on purpose so Chris makes a video on it to learn how to fix scratches like these

  • 24:10 or just buy a sand paper block

  • You are the man!!!! The professor!!

  • Great job! How well would this work on metallic paint? I would love to see a video of any differences (tips) that you might have.

  • Thanks for making my scratch 10x worse

  • It looks great! Have you ever tried this on a car with a tricoat paint color?

  • I tried this technique on my White Infiniti FX50 with many stone chips on the front bumper and hood. Unfortunately, the touch up paint is stripping away completely when I sand it. I put about 4 layers of the paint and waited about an hour in between layers. First, I used 800 Grit and I changed it 1500 Grit but the paint strips off. What am I doing wrong? The Touch Up Paint is OEM. Do I first need to put a layer of primer?

  • Well my painter said he'll paint my fender of color blue for 1000INR thats 13.34 dollars!! 😅

  • I can't imagine my life without Chris! shit, I even need him more than my gf! 🤦🏻‍♂😂 Gracias for all you do man ! 👌

  • wow

  • I bought paint pen months ago hoping to do this by myself. But I'm too scared to start. I'm so happy to find this video!

  • I have everything but not 3k and 5k paper and not polis. I will do it still. Does i meed polish or is the result bad without

  • Very good job ... Amazing bro ... But in the end no matter what ... You will still see the scratch in your heart and mind whenever you see that spot .. but again nice job

  • don't know if the car being white has anything to do with how well it came out but the results are so much better than the ammo (BLK MB AMG G Wagon) i watched. well done.

  • Perfect

  • Can you do a video on how to fix deep scratches on a bumper (or plastic material) ?

    • I have a similar video on that here, check it out:

  • Another great and usefull video from Chris Fix, I just mess up with my bumper paint, it is not a big scratch but I don't like it. I will use this product and this technique. One more time, thanks Chris.

  • Wish I could’ve seen the reaction of the vandalized car’s owner after seeing that her car looks like it fresh out the factory.

  • New to the channel. What the hell is soapy wooder?

  • Will this process work on a front bumper since it’s not a metal panel like the body panels? I scrapped my cars front lip getting out of a drive way but it looks like my bumper is a plastic type material. Thank you!

  • Picked up a Mazda b4000 ( I wanted one from when I saw yours 5 years ago 😂 ) it’s a barn find but the wife backed into the lawnmower and chipped a bit of paint off gonna give this a shot to see if It will work to save it from rusting in that spot thanks for the video now I won’t feel uneasy about using it as it seems a simple as the headlight restore I did on the civic

  • any recommendations on specific paint pens? 2013 VW CC and all i can find is just the paint no pen like you use.

  • Can i use Spray paint instead of the brush one ? Have alot of scratches to repair & spray can would cover more .... also can the rubbing compound blend in the spray paint without sanding ?? Thx

  • Thank you, but please less talk and more work.

  • If your car is clear wrapped, would the paint still damage in the sun?

    • It would prevent the UV from fading your paint!

  • You have given me so much inspiration with your various videos. I bought a F150 work truck that's rough...because it's a work truck. But that doesn't mean a girl doesn't want it clean and pretty. I have hope now! Thank you for your videos. I've been an addict that past two evenings!

  • Hey, there's no Link for where to get the "Soapy Wooder" for us up here in Canada, eh?... Guess I'll have to ask my Sis-In-Law from NJ! Thanks Chris - you are truly an excellent source of "COVID Sanity"!! :-)

  • So I followed this video for a scratch in my f150 platinum, but the only thing that didn't work out was that I bought non Ford paint. it didn't match. So it depends on the car color I guess for if you can use manufacturer or not.

  • 26:24 my boy himself had a hard time finding it LMAO

  • Great video, going to try this on my 300 now :)

  • From start to finish......AMAZING! Your videos are truly something else! You are the best with editing, animation, and everything else in between. Keep up the good work!

  • You sound like the guy that’s on every channel on the tv at 3am trying to sell random stuff😂😂 Quality video though man thank you

  • Soapy Wooder😂😂😂

  • I’m confused. You add paint to the scratch so it’s above the surrounding. You sand it to level with surrounding. You add clear coat to the paint and sand it to the surrounding level. But... isn’t the paint already at that level? Won’t sanding the clear coat to surrounding level undo the clear coat? Am I missing something?

    • Notice how on the animation he shows at 13:32 there are multiple levels. When you add the paint you wanna sand it to surrounding level of the paint layer, you don't want to leave too much paint to make it level with surrounding clear coat. After you sand the excess paint down to the ideal level you add the clear coat on top of it and then sand it down to surface level. Does that make sense?

  • Great video. My husband thinks it funny I enjoy cleaning videos, but they are so satisfying!!!

  • what type of alcohol was that when you put it on the clear coat??

  • What is the soapy water for like does it help with sanding and prevent less scratches?

  • I bet 99% of people who buy these pens just paint it on and walk away, and they're done.

  • During watching this I found out I have a scratch on my monitor :D

  • How to order that paint pen. Pearl white #4

  • I wasn't even look for a how to videos yet on here after my wife 2020 mitsubishi cross got scratches the algorithm sent me there..keep up the good works, you got a sub👍

  • great work, thank you for sharing this amazing video! I am going to give a try.

  • Can you do another video of the same but this time with rock chips on the hood ?

  • Just

  • Would this work with metallic paint?

  • I bet most of the thumbs down are from auto body repair

  • In the video you are using 800 grit. Not mentioned in the supplies at the beginning. Which grit for initial clear coat sand?

  • i like ur vids

  • Automotive paint shops punching the air rn

  • Great work as always

  • I be like. *takes shower in acholal* Hmmmmm my scratches didn't disappear form my cat.

  • Graduate from Vanna White School of Hand Modeling

  • Another excellent video with continual reminders to take pride in one's work, do it perfectly the first time if possible. Well done again providing sound evidence why you have such a large number of views and faithful subscribers. Like many I'm going to eventually watch ALL your videos. Thank you paisano.

  • I have to be honest several times I was thinking " ah haa I can still see it Chris" even after clear coat, then he added more steps and fair play, its very hard to see, especially through a camera lens and screen. Great I have to hunt around my 208 gt line for the colour code sticker (which is not in or on any door area of my car) -_-

  • nice edit lel 2:15 if u pause at the correct frame you can cleary see the scratch over the brush, open your eyes people

  • I really like the honesty of the after results!!!

  • Hello @chrisfix I want to fix a deep scratch on my rear bumper on my 2015 jeep grand cherokee, will this work on a plastic bumper. Thank you for your help

  • A really thorough, detailed, super helpful tutorial...thank u so much!

  • I just used this method on a deep scratch. Worked well. On a side note, sanding a black car was terrifying, lol

  • Sweet vid 🤌🏻

  • when you can just get a fender at a junkyard lol

  • What do you do if it goes past the primer into the metal? Do you have to reprime the metal before adding new paint?

  • Will this process work for rock chips on the front bumper or hood?

  • Makes me want to buy a POS at a used car dealer just to restore it.

  • Man that looks like complicated lmao

  • Awesome. Thank you for the detailed explanation I think it helps to make sure all steps followed, which have to be done to get the same results. Much appreciated. Question,? did you finish with the clear coat scratches? Alcohol cleans but it comes back. I imagine you just go from after paint to the clear coat prep and then follow on through.

  • I tried fixing it my self withour knowing this video existed and it came out horrible 😂 Will definitely do it again, thank you so much for your videos.

  • Nice

  • Scratching a persons car is the most spineless thing someone can do.

  • Nice work. Could you do one with fixing metallic / pearlescent coats? They feel more tricky. Can't get them to look that good :(

  • From Portugal watching crisfix

  • Hey Chris...can you try using the "scratch repair nano spray" ?

  • Thank you Chris. I will be trying this.

  • When do you use primer?

  • does it work on black cars to because white coloar is perfekt u dont see any thing

  • Thanks, Chris. I'm gonna fix my girlfriend's Honda CRV grocery store parking lot scratches using your method. I'm gonna get so laid!!

  • Could you do a full paint correction video or a full detailing video that includes step by step polishing, waxing, scratch removal, etc?

    • @Chickenbone I don’t believe he has

    • He has definitely done that video
