$15,000 Wood Slab Kitchen Island - One-Man Woodworking Shop

Publicerades den 8 apr 2021
This wood slab kitchen island was one of my biggest woodworking projects to date. It was also my first kitchen island/woo countertop project! Made from a single piece of locally salvaged Black Walnut and the voids filled with jet black epoxy resin. This slab started out at nine feet long and over five feet wide. Rough cut by me and the final shape was precision cut by a CNC. I even decided to deliver this one personally and help with the installation. Let me know if you have any questions about the build!

  • Genius! Way out of my league, though. This is like when you see a beautiful girl on the street, adorable, a figure to die for and you ask yourself, what are my chances? None, obviously. Same here. You have to be an artist to turn this level of craftsmanship out. Hey, I can do a wooden box! Seriously, this is a great video. I like the calm demeanor of the narrator (creator)

    • No chances with that kind of mindset.

    • You just wasted the wood. What a pity!

    • You should be working 4 NASA! 😂 😂 😂 😂

    • Not wood but it was so beautiful! Great job! I would totally have a dining room table from a slab though!

    • What are your chances!? You have yourself NO CHANCE. gotta play, to win. You don't know, what other people like, so don't deny yourself! There's a reason women dress like that, you might very well be the only one to compliment her, so don't count yourself out before even trying.

  • Not wood. I prefer marble.

  • Wood for me ... but, and I know it's a huge amount of work, butchers block end-grain style :o Just imagine a 3 inch thick slab made of thousands of end grains ... all that surfacing and planing, glueing and clamping :o

  • Wood: master craftsman! Instead of a wood countertop I have a traditional oak herringbone wooden floor. Never thought of getting a wooden countertop. It's great to see your craft!

  • Not Wood. From Sydney Australia.

  • WOOD ???? I say that with extreme hesitation..... between me, and my 7yr old kid, and hobby craft loving wife it would probably be a $15000 mistake.... But wow..... it was sure beautiful when it was new !!! Great job and video...

  • Wood

  • Would have wood, for sure. Awesome video! Keep them coming.

  • Would like to have it but will end up burning it 😅. Like your "Jerry rig everything" version of wood working commentary.👍🏾

  • Absolutely unbelievable, I would definitely choose the wood countertops

  • Love the look but no I would not have wood countertops.

  • Was this the best way to use a 120 year old wood? You could use any wood for this.

  • i would like to be the guy that uses a wood counter top - but like you i would absolutely demolish it

  • Wood...like. Mad skillz, props mannn awesome vid!!!

  • Definitely I go with wood after seeing your video,,,your very honest person I build my new house in Indianapolis building a Bar I was wondering if is there any kind of furniture or any decorations stuff to buy from website by u, plzz reply if is there any,,,,good luck

  • n the short time since being recommended your channel it has become my absolute favorite! No video have I watched from you has been less than the entirety of the video! It seems like each video goes too quick regardless of watching the full length. It’s by far and beyond contestation! Keep up the amazing work and being you! Very real and down to earth!

  • I "wood" have wooden countertops!!! LOL. Beautiful work!

  • Wood. Very nice.

  • Nah I'd rather make a white concrete one, I am so tempted to make my own tops, just not in the right space

  • Since I’m Indian and I cook Indian and far eastern cuisine most of the time you get a lot of spillage and stains. Hence I’d say no to wood for my kitchen. But I wouldn’t mind it anywhere else given the right treatment

  • I am originally from Spokane, born and raised in a vegetable farm.

  • I LOVE the look of wood counter top.

  • Thank you for talking. I need it

  • Wood have wood! Wow, your amazing! We live in Seattle pretty sure near that house. How small the world seems. I can say you made the right choice to do this full time. I learned a lot and seriously enjoyed the commentary with the great video! Thank you and please share more of your passion!

  • Would you wont you. good video :D

  • I have no interest in woodmaking...... Until now , great channel its so interesting , just subscribed & greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

  • I’d have a wooden island but I’d probably stick with granite countertops because like you I’d damage it too easily. A wooden island is there for breakfast and to put groceries on and prepare cooking.

  • First video of yours I’ve had the pleasure of watching , just subscribed. 👍🏻

  • Looks like Tigre stripes 🤙🏼

  • wood

  • Would knot have wooden countertops but this is so beautiful and fit the client’s home so nicely. I enjoyed the commentary. You do you and keep up the amazing work.

  • I definitely would have wood countertops. They're beautiful and lend a warm feeling to the area.

  • Nice Job, I don't think I would go with wood, I'm just too hard on the kitchen. This one looks awesome though. I like the fact that there's no music in your video. The wrong music can turn people off. Keep up the great work.

  • I've never understood the lure of wood and epoxy. It's just not my thing and likely never will be. But I gave you a subscription and a thumbs up anyways because I like your business operation. Honest business, that's all I ever want when I'm doing business with someone and I see that in the way you run your business.

  • would... absolutely

  • I would use a wood countertops. But it definitely depends on the kitchen theme.

  • Wood, would certainly wood. Wouldn't everyone who isn't an animal wood?

  • I would love to have a wooden countertop, however, marble is a lot more durable.

  • I don’t think you over talked. Enjoyed your work. I have wood countertops, just not as beautiful as that walnut top!

  • I would definitely love having wood countertops. I know the require more care and babying, buy the character of wood is unmatched

  • dude that’s incredible

  • 15 grand?!?!? fuck wood or wood not? who the fuck is paying that for a kitchen island ... this aint it brahhh... its nice but not that nice.

  • Not wood. I would also put it through too much abuse, so even though it would look awesome...it wouldn't hold up. Great video! Also, like many others in here, I love the commentary. Though I also love woodworking sounds, it's great to be walked through the process and hear the maker's thoughts. Keep up the fantastic work!

  • Wood forsure

  • awesome video, glad i found the channel! would not wood, too scared. do you have any videos on how to maintain/care for a wooden table like this? I have one, and I'd also be curious on how to tell the level of craftsmanship that went into a piece like this.

  • wow... im gonna give it an 11 !! beautiful work.. yes, ide like to have wood tops too but, like you, ide kill it....

  • I would. I know they would get beat up too. But idk if I had a countertop like THAT I would probably be a little more careful.

  • Wouldn’t, but it’s gorgeous! Maybe for a little bar though, my normal kitchen gets too much action

  • Wouldn’t

  • Would definitely use wood. Probably not resin, though.

  • Great vid!

  • Wood not lol

  • $15000? Christ!

  • Would would love to have wood countertop but I would say I would not have the time to maintain them.

  • Wood countertops

  • I would go for the wood countertop, to be honest! Its the new wave

  • Wood. That's a really beautiful job!

  • Wood

  • Not wood! It's beautiful but not for my kitchen. I loved your video though. It was a first for me and loved it. Keep up the great work!

  • I have a wood island I threw together out of necessity (had the slab and knew it would be semi-temporary) but I have to say, I love it. Thank you for the inspiration and the opportunity to see the finished product installed!

  • Would. Dude this is freakin impressive,

  • I have a maple counter top. It doesnt like water. When it looks bad i just sand an oil it. Like new

  • Wood not 😉 Nice to have access to those commercial tools. How much do they charge for their services?

  • Continue with your commentary please. You have a great voice.

  • Beautiful

  • $15 STACKS for that table top??? Damn

  • Wood, in some cases. I once put in a butcher block island top. It did not have the range in it like this one and it worked out great. On the other hand someone else wanted a butcher block for the counter where the range was and they did exactly like you said. The pulled a hot pot off the stove and set it on the wood and it burned.

  • Would, but not in my main kitchen...wet bar or laundry room or something like that. I too am too much of an animal!!! Love your blahs and wonderful lessons!!

  • Wood - you did great justice to tree.

  • Looove the mute button extra tab bit

  • Not wood. And only for the practicality. it would be incredibly beautiful, but the cost to build a countertop that was even remotely as durable as even laminate or formica would be easily twice the price of say granite or tile.

  • The fretful baboon conversly whistle because scorpion broadly sparkle pace a belligerent plot. ripe, jealous twine

  • Quartz would have been cheaper

  • Wood for sure

  • Wow, you did an awesome job! Impressive!

  • Butchers block

  • I 'Wood'

  • They look beautiful! I’m with you though, I’d ruin them on accident!

  • Would definitely love a wood countertop.

  • I wood not have wood countertops! I'd be too worried about placing hot metals such as pans and pots on them and ruining the product.

  • Wood. Nice work. I hope and pray you except Jesus in to your life, its the end of days as pridicted in the bible and I guess you would love to learn some more skills from the ultimate wood worker. Godbless you and your work.

  • Not wood. But wish I could have wood. Absolutely beautiful. My family is rough on our things. I would need something made from titanium.

  • Wood

  • wow that turned out nice

  • I wouldn't have wooden countertop. I love the looks of them, but knowing me the beautiful thing would not last. I really enjoyed watching you work and i did not mind the chatter lol, it actually helped understand the process and technique a little more. Thank you and I will return for some more!

  • I totally Wood have wood counter tops....girly says only mail is allowed on it though. LOL

  • I woodn't

  • Amazing 👏

  • Would. I definitely would have wood countertops. You do amazing work. Thank you for great content.

  • Wouldn’t. I’m 22 and I want to get into woodworking in the near future. I don’t have a garage or shed yet so I’m going to be building one soon. What’s the smallest shed size you’d recommend for a wood shop

  • Love the wood, how much was the raw slab?

  • The work was 👏 amazing! Fit like a glove...But I personally wouldn't use wood as a kitchen counter...Too porous and the chance of damage is too great for the reward of its looks...

  • Can't you increase the epoxy finish coating to provide better resistance to the wear and tear as a countertop? I agree with you I personally would never use it, but it seems that you can mitigate it a little bit by increasing the thickness of the finish coat.

  • I would maybe do a bar top but never s cooking countertop. beautiful though.

  • I have to admit I’m not as dedicated as you when it comes to wood but this looks great and you can see the craftsmanship

  • Lol dude wraps the video with “I love getting 15,000 dollars” no shit

  • would do wood! I loved it. thanks for the entertainment while i study

  • i would wood.

  • Wood is beautiful. As a counter top but. I would probably ruin that piece. Great work worth the price👍🏽

  • Love the video I do tree work it’s my passion in life and love live edge slabs! The look is so cool! I would do wood counter tops. But in places not everywhere just because I know my family and some places just need to be carefree of worrying of damage. Just for the sake of having kids running around all the time! Love the video great job Cheers 🍻
